Help Sonam Bhuti Gurung's family rebuild their home

In late September, a rockfall broke through the wall of the family's only house and filled it with stone. Local builders have priced the rebuild. Every gift goes toward it.

Sonam and her family

Sonam was born in Chharka Bhot, a stone-walled village in Upper Dolpa reached from Mustang by a rough trail.

Her father died when the children were young. Her mother raised four children alone: Sonam and three brothers. Two of the brothers are monks; the third studies in Kathmandu.

With help from her mitbuwa, Sonam studied in Dunai and Kathmandu. When there was no money for +2, Chharka Bhot School paid for it on one condition: that she come home and teach. She did. She taught the nursery class, then walked two hours to the family's goats after school, and was back in the classroom the next morning.

She is now in Kathmandu, studying for her exams.

The family has no breadwinner. Her mother farms and herds; her brothers are monks or students. In Chharka, every plank and every bag of cement arrives by tractor, motorbike or yak, so rebuilding costs far more than it would in connected parts of Nepal.

How people came to know Sonam

Before Herne Katha, Sonam was filming everyday Chharka on her phone, for a small audience: the school, the herds, the long winters. Few people outside Dolpa knew her name.

In May 2026, the Nepali documentary series Herne Katha released episode 165, Chharka School and Sonam. It followed her through a day of teaching and herding, and carried her story to viewers across Nepal and beyond.

Where Chharka is

Chharka Bhot sits in the far north of Dolpa district, close to Mustang and the Tibetan border. It is reached mainly by tractor, motorbike or yak along a rough trail from Mustang, over high passes.

What happened

Heavy rain and snowfall in late September triggered a rockfall above the house. Stone and earth broke through the back wall and filled the main room. Neighbours turned out to clear the site, and the family plans to rebuild after Losar 2027.

What it costs

Local contractors who have built in the village priced the full rebuild, seven rooms and a toilet, at NPR 4,592,950 (about HKD 235,500).

The goal of NPR 5,000,000 adds NPR 407,050 for transport and price rises at this altitude.

HKD at the Nepal Rastra Bank rate of 1 October 2026, HKD 1 = NPR 19.50.
